The Linda and Bill Hopkins

Please visit our In Memoriam page for a celebration of life for Linda Pruett.

The Southern California Preparedness Foundation thanks all of you who took the time to participate in the 2020 Valley Disaster Preparedness Fair. We hope you found plenty of useful information to help you become more resilient in the case of unexpected adversities. If you are already well on your way to being well prepared, great! Keep going, and encourage your neighbors to follow your example. If you haven’t started, please get going now! The time you have to prepare stops when the disaster starts. Taking even one step each day will put you onto the right path.

How can I view the presentations I missed or want to see again?

Special thanks to our many volunteers and sponsors who stepped up amid the double difficulties of the pandemic closures and the loss of Bill Hopkins, the Fair’s prime mover since its inception. The decision to continue the Fair by transitioning to a virtual platform from a physical one presented many challenges. Chief among those was the limited time available to solicit, select, record, and edit the many presentations to be “aired”. Even though we had some team members working around the clock in the closing days, not everything was ready on Fair day. Our production team is continuing its work and will be posting the finished videos as they become ready. Keep an eye on this page for links to those videos. Once ready, they will remain available for future viewing. To see our available videos posting, click here.

When and how can I get my Emergency Preparedness Starter Kit?

Now that we know how many families registered for and attended the Fair, we are completing our orders of supplies and will soon start assembly of the Kits. Those who registered will receive a separate e-mail message listing their Kit pickup point. One such location will be the November 21 Blood Drive at St. Euphrasia Catholic Church in Granada Hills. Several City Council District field offices, and selected Neighborhood Council offices have also offered to serve as distribution locations.

Where can I get more preparedness information?

Your Emergency Preparedness Starter Kits will include some great information and reference material. In addition, you’ll find more ideas and links on the Southern California Preparedness Foundation Web site at www.SoCalPrep.us. City of Los Angeles departments and community trainers are working to develop remote educational sessions to replace or supplement training that has, until recently, been given in person. Watch the Foundation Web site for announcements as these sessions become available.

Top five reasons to get prepared NOW

  1. You live in Southern California.
  2. You might save your own life or the life of a loved one (human or pet).
  3. In a large disaster, emergency services will be overwhelmed and won't be there to help you for days or perhaps weeks.
  4. The first 60 minutes after a disaster are critical for survival. Do you have a plan to follow — or will you panic?
  5. When disaster strikes, the time for preparation just ended. Do you have food, water, and first-aid supplies at home, in your car, and at the office? Don't forget supplies for your pets! Prepare now!
